Healthy July- Simple Rules to Help You Stay Healthy

Hello, I can't believe July is already here! How fast is this year going?

A while ago I did a blog post about body image and I had some lovely comments back about it so I thought that today I would do an official fitness post.

Summer appears to have arrived and you are always hearing of people wanting to get the summer body that they so require and I am probably no different but I have never wanted to have a thigh gap, I have always wanted a six pack. My body shape has always been muscular, doing gymnastics and dance from when i was three to 18 meant that my leg and arm muscles were always well defined to help me train. When I headed to university I became a cheerleader and that helped me keep in shape too.

This year though, because I am on my year in industry, I have been moving every 3 months and haven't had access to the gym. Although I have tried to stay healthy it is never as easy without someone there to motivate you. So as it's a new month I have decided to have a super healthy kick to try and get me ready for summer, and to help my body feel great.

So to start this month off I decided to apply six rules to my life to help stay healthy

1. Stay Hydrated- This is especially important at the moment due to the hot weather! Swap out the sugary drinks including squash for normal water. If you want a change of taste add chopped up fruit to the water like lemon and lime or strawberries and cucumber! Water helps wash out the toxins from your body and keeps your skin looking bright.

2. Step away from the sugar- Sugar is in everything, and I am definitely a chocoholic but, sugar can also lead to extra weight if you're not burning it off. Madaline Shaws "Get The Glow" book made me realise just how dependent I was on sugar and so by firstly not eating the cakes, sweet and chocolates you can wean yourself off the baddies. Sugar is addictive and can also make you think you're hungry when you're not, so another reason to try a month without.

3. Exercise regularly- This may seem like common sense but everyone has had that moment where they can't be bothered to do the class or head out for that jog but if you do it, you will feel so much better for it! Exercise realises endorphins that make you happy and so even if you aren't in the mood before hand you will be thankful after. Don't just try and do one type of exercise try and shake it up and target different muscle groups too.

4. Reduce screen time- This is going to be really tough for me, I do everything on my laptop but by spending less time in front of the screen I can do more out in the world. I'm aiming to reduce my usage by at least an hour a night (normally my laptop is on from 6pm-11pm). We have all become so involved in the digital world that sometimes we need that time to take step away each day. Plus what harm is an hour away from your phone going to do? I shall let you know.

5. Eat less carbohydrates- This is a personal one, and I know some people love their carbs but to help build muscle you need more protein and less carbs and so that is what I'm doing. In the past few years I have struggled eating bread and pasta due to the gluten so I can cope without them, I will certainly find no potatoes hard though, my chosen exceptions are rice, rye bread, rice noodles in small moderation and sweet potatoes.

6. Make Fruit and Veg your best friends- Eat plenty of fruit and veg but try to eat more berries than bananas as they don't have so many sugars etc. I love fruit and veg so I'm excited to try and find new ways to add them into my diet.

7. Smile- If you stand in front of the mirror smiling it really does lift your mood and so I have decided to smile even when I am having a rubbish day or I'm feeling blue. Smiling is good for the soul as just like exercise endorphins are realised when we smile which can help reduce stress!!

Feel free to join in with me this month on Healthy July, I would love to know what your healthy plans are and I shall be posting healthy ideas and workouts throughout this month too!

Love
