Why Edinburgh is the perfect Winter Staycation

I love to travel however recently the opportunity to jump off our little island onto main land Europe has been limited. This got me thinking back to my trip to Edinburgh at the beginning of this year and how blown away I was by the city.

Edinburgh is one of those places in the UK that feels completely different to anywhere in England. The whole place is a buzz with music, laughter and happiness which is intoxicating. The city has everything you could want and more for a break away and although it can be a little costly compared to other places in the UK here are my top reasons to visit.

The Old Town

When we stayed back in February our hotel was located on the edge of the Old Town. We got to walk through the main street multiple times a day and every restaurant, cafe and pub we pasted we were tempted to go in. The cobbled streets feel like you're immersed in history. You're also very likely to find someone playing the bagpipes which just adds to the Scottish feel.

The Castle

You can't talk about history without talking about Edinburgh Castle. Not only does the castle offer the opportunity to learn more about the city but provides some of the best views of the city. It would be my favourite spot to take in the city and I cant recommend it enough to take a break at the top.

Christmas Markets

Now I haven't visited Edinburgh Christmas markets but I have heard good things. I mean whats not to love about a Christmas Market with mulled cider, wine chocolate and lots of festival spirit. It makes me want to pack my suitcase with every warm layer I have a get upto the city as soon as possible.

The Dogs

There are many fantastic restaurants in Edinburgh but my recommendation has to be a little place called The Dogs, its not easy to find over near Harvey Nichols but it is so worth it, even if you just go for lunch. The food is incredible, the flavours new and just thinking about my visit makes my mouth water. Get there!

The Camera Obscurer

This is probably the most random reason you should visit Edinburgh, but the city along with culture, shopping, fantastic views and history also has ALOT of fun things to do to. One of the best parts of our trip was how much fun we had at the Camera Obscurer. Not only do you get to play in the mirror rooms but also get to experience the entire city as well.

Gin, Gin and more Gin

Gin bars are popping up left right and centre and with numerous gins made in the city, Edinburgh certainly has their fair share of places. I would recommend booking onto a gin tour (you will need to book it roughly a month in advance though). Also, if you want a fantastic gin bar, make sure you head over to 56 North. Its located near the university campus in the Old Town but if you're staying near by its definitely worth a stop.

The Views

I've mentioned the views already with the castle and the camera obscurer providing you with views across the city. If you have the time though (and you've driven), its worth heading out of the city into the surrounding hills. The views are even more spectacular as you get to see the whole city spread out in front of you.

Side Streets

If you hadn't heard about Edinburgh side streets I would be surprised, you can wander from the Old Town to the New. Every main road is filled with small streets or alleys with a surprising restaurant, cafe or shop at the end. Each road is different, and not also allows you to escape from the mainstream tourist spots it also allows you to find new areas of the city.

With Christmas around the corner, Edinburgh really is the perfect place to visit. Now can I back too?

Love
Erin
