Leeds Freshers Week Guide

I feel like I can stand it pretty good sted on what is good during freshers week in Leeds. I've been through 4 years of them after all and so, although I wont be attending this year I thought I may as well create a list so that others can have the fun.

Freshers week is always pretty daunting, you've arrived at uni, you don't know anyone, you have no idea where to go in the city. This can often result in aimless wandering and only attending events at the union. This is of course absolutely fine BUT, you will be on campus most of the time and so branching off and seeing what else is on offer early on is a good idea!

I would say I was a pretty typical fresher so for all those that aren't into super wavy garms or listening to music with a super heavy base I would say this list will be pretty suitable for you...

Saturday- Head to the Union. It will be busy, you may get fed up but it means you can learn about the place you will be spending ALOT of time. The drinks are cheap and you can get taxis home safe. It's an easy win and means you don't have to do much thinking apart from buying a ticket. Word of warning, freshers gets full! The queues can get pretty big. Although on a normal night you wouldn't rock up until 12.30, on this week being there for 11.30 is advisable.

Sunday- Hifi is a gem. Tickets always sell out really early but they have lots available on the door. It just means you need to be there by 9.30/10 (OUCH). The club is little but the music is incredible and you can't help but have a fantastic time. Trust me, its a winner!

Monday- Quids in, the Union or Mint Mondays. Quids in as you can guess is a super cheap night. It's based in what would be classed as a Beckett (Met) stomping ground. The venue is huge and in the centre of the city. The Union has the Rave from Out of Space, which is bound to be good fun. If you want to take a leaf from my book and throw yourself into something you may not like, you could head to mint

Tuesday - To Town or Mix it up. You've had a pretty heavy start, I would highly recommend heading to Belgrave Music hall for a fantastic slice of pizza and a great view of the city (and drinks). From there you can go and check out any of the amazing bars around the city centre such as Mook which do 241 cocktails, or recently opened Red Door. If you loved Hifi on Sunday, then you can head back for another fantastic night (they are super busy on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays).  However if you think you can handle it i'd highly recommend grabbing a ticket to the mixtape project which is back at Canal mills. They even have a bouncy castle! So whats not to love ?!

Wednesday- Warehouse. Sports night is Wednesday, even during freshers week this will still happen. Be prepared for rowdy groups and rugby boys boasting about their black cards (it gets them in for free and they love it). They're good looking though, so they get away with it.

Thursday- Donuts at the Faversham. Donuts literally give away free donuts! It's right by campus and it a fantastic night out

Friday- Fruity Fridays. Fruity is the pinnacle of Leeds nightlife. Its cheesy, its VK heaven and it is fantastic. People try to hate it, but eventually you just have to embrace the weekly night. If you want to make a night of it, head to terrace first where they do cheap cocktails before 9 and a DJ playing from 10.30ish

Saturday- Trippy Vision at the Church. If you fancy something a little different you can still grab your tickets to this event. The Church is a fantastic venue which is of course, in an old church. It's hard not to have a good time in such a cool space.

So here's to a freshers of fun. It will be busy, it will be ridiculously warm and you are bound to get frustrated at queues as they can get pretty big. Just a few pieces of advice..

  • Don't go to tiger tiger, just because you know the name, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • Make sure you have data before a night out. You've only just met people and you can very easily loose them.
  • Don't wear heels. Put those heels back in the box, Leeds isn't a heels city apart from call lane, your trainers are your new best friend.

Love
Erin

P.S. I hope you've enjoyed some of my throw back photos to my fresher days, and other university nights out!
