Visiting Cornwall; Boardmasters, Waves and Newquay

One of my favourite things to do when at the seaside is to close my eyes and listen to the waves crashing onto the sand, the pull back of the water and the methodical continuous buzz that the ocean provides, so naturally, this post will have me visit two beaches.

When we were in Cornwall, the Boardmasters surfing competition was taking place. In the afternoon, after typing out the mandatory 500 words of my dissertation we jumped in the car and drove along the coastal road to the surf capital of the UK, Newquay.

The wind was strong, yet thankfully not too cold as we wandered along the main high street.

One thing I love about Cornwall is how many independent stops there are and Newquay is no exception. There are numerous boutiques and to my delight, shops discussing sustainability and the need to look after the earth and their communities.

Take the shop called the wave project, where all profits go towards their charity or the numerous surf shops who only sell fair trade products.

We continued along the high street up the road towards Fistral beach where Boardmasters surf competition was taking place.

All of the pop up stalls were already open ready for the festival and again I was hit by just how many companies who were there cared about being sustainable and ethically sourced materials, brands such as Passenger who plant a tree for every product that was sold and Bear Essentials who only use natural products.

After wandering though the stalls and mentally spending hundreds of pounds we found ourselves ordering chips and grabbing a bench to watch the women's surfing competition.

The weather was glorious with only a few clouds in the sky and the wind was certainly not stopping anything.

After relaxing for a little we wandered back to the car and drove to our next stop, Watergate Bay.

I don't think I have ever seen the ocean calm at Watergate Bay, the swells always have a hint of danger and often has a strong undercurrent which can get you into trouble if you're not a strong swimmer.

Thankfully for us this wasn't an issue for us.

Until this summer I hadn't been body boarding or surfing for at least 2 years and my gosh did it feel good to be back in the water. There really is nothing like it! I was however exceptionally thankful for my wetsuit.

After an hour in the sea we headed home. Having not been able to exercise for the past 2 months, its safe to say I was exhausted.

Who would have guessed how much fun body boarding was even as an adult but I'd say having that moment of pure escapism is something we all need in our lives. If you have the opportunity, grad a board and dive right in, you're bound to have a great time.

Whats your favourite holiday activity? Do you love Cornwall?

Love
