Can You Do Good Whilst Going To The Toilet?

This post is a little different to my normal sustainable recommendations and information. Instead I want to talk a little about toilets, yes you read that correct!

As I delve further into the ethical and sustainable world, more information continues to amaze and shock me. This time the shock was about how about 40% of the worlds population do not have access to a toilet. FOURTY PERCENT! Whats even scarier is that every year around 289,000 children die from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor sanitation and water. When you break that number down that is 800 children a day!

Toilets are something most people don't spend much time thinking about but it is a huge privilage to not have to poop in a small hole outside, where there is a often a risk of contracting diseases which could kill you. Instead we get to have clean sanitation, plumbing, and be in the comfort of our own home.

What if there was a way though to help those around the world whilst going about your business?

Well that's exactly what you can now do with the brand Who Gives A Crap. The brand is all about helping non-for-profit organisations who work to improve basic sanitation, water and hygiene in developing countries by donating half of the companies profits to these charities. Charity giving is just a small part of why this brands helping the planet though.

What you may not know is that the majority of toilet paper brands are still using virgin trees to produce their products. We are litterally cutting down trees to wipe our bum and then flush them down the toilet. There is another way though, that of using recycled paper which is a kinder option for the planet because "Trees should be for hugging, not wiping". There are a few other brands that do produce recycled toilet paper (Waitrose Basic Range) but it is few and far between.

Along with using recycled paper to produce their loo roll, Who Gives A Crap doesn't use any bleach or dyes unlike many other brands, meaning it is better for your skin along with the earth.

It's funny to think that you can do good whilst sitting on the toilet doing your business but it is actually the case and I for one am a big believer in small easy positive changes that you can make. You can even have a subscription box of 48 rolls for £36 where you get them delivered to your door every 12 weeks. With each standard loo roll being equal to 2 it means they are pretty darn cost effective, not to mention the packaging is brilliant.

I for one am I converter. No plastic, no harmful chemicals, no trees being cut down all whilst money is being donated to charities to help improve conditions for the 40% of the world who still don't have access to a toilet.

Do you give a crap? I do
