Exploring Santorini; A walk from Fira to Oia

Setting of early we caught the bus from our hotel into the main town, Fira. The walk would take us around 2 hours with beautiful scenery along the way but as I had read on so many websites it's the thing to do, I felt the need to see what all the fuss was about.

We started through the main high street and begun the steady climb to Imerovigli, a town just on the outskirts of Fira. We wandered through the narrow streets and past hotels I can only dream of staying in. The restaurants in the area also seemed to be far cheaper than the places in both Fira and Oia and still had the fantastic view over the bay.

After finding our way out of the maze which made up Imerovigli the buildings disappeared and the road opened up leaving a view of just the sea and Oia in the distance beyond. We started walking up the winding road and got a little hot and sweaty along the way. Thankfully there was a cool sea breeze to take the edge off.

I chose comfort over style in a big way on the walk, I can't for the life of me understand how people enjoyed it if they were not wearing comfy trainers! For me all I needed was my  bright shorts to feel super summery and ready to explore.

After walking up and down hills and past numerous white washed chapels in your typical Santorini fashion we reached a perfectly places cafe where fresh orange juice could be squeezed right in front of you and home made cafe available should you wish. We grabbed an ice cold fanta and then started the final big climb (more of just a long incline if I'm honest).

After finally reaching the top we stopped for a quick snack and a small rest by the beautiful chapel with a heavenly view (no pun intended) that was by far one of the most impressive on the island! Then thankfully it was all down hill to Oia. We walked past numerous grand hotels until we reached the centre of town.

The town itself was stunning, with white wallks and marble/white stone floors and white squares dotted amoungst the streets with designer shops at every turn (if only I could afford them)!

From there we meandered to the edge of town where a castle ruin could be found  offering more splendid views of the town before heading back to the bus stop.

We would have loved to have stayed longer but we were both a little weary after the 10 km walk in the heat, thank goodness we brought as much water as we did for it!

Have you been to Santorini? Would you like to visit? Are you a sensible shoes kinda person?
