Hello, hello, hello! So firstly can I just do a big big
apology that I haven't been blogging for the past 5 weeks. I somehow thought
that I would be able to fit in writing about my trip in whilst travelling but boy was I so, so wrong.
South Africa has been amazing, and I really want to share my
trip with anyone who wants to listen.
So let's go back to the very beginning. Some of my
posts in the next few weeks will be a speel about the journey, others may be what
I got up to in certain areas. I have done so much that I want to tell you everything
about it, but that's quite hard to fit in, as so much has happened.
We arrived in Joburg early morning and settlled into
our hostel, Shoestrings Lodge ( I had stayed there before and the owner, Rob,
is brilliant, you even get picked up from the airport for free which is a nice
bonus especially when you are really tired). After a power nap we headed into
the city. I may have stayed in Johannasburg for a few nights before but it was
always just a stopover and so it was nice to finally see a little bit of the
financial capital.
We went to Mandalas square where there is a huge shopping
centre, if you're English, it is 10x better than the Trafford Centre! We then went
for a lovely meal in the square as well. Sadly the area is undergoing lots of
building work, but I can imagine sitting there, when the building work is finished, will be
lovely. Our meal was delicious and we could finally say "cheers" to us being in South
Africa, with a cocktail of course.
The steak was delicious!
and I fell in love with this little box for tips!
The next morning we were up early to be picked up by the
BazBus. If you are wanting to travel around South Africa, but don't want to
drive it yourself, the BazBus is a brilliant alternative. They pick up from the
hostel where you are staying (as long as you pick one from their list ) and they drop you
off at your next hostel. They often put deals on as well which allows you to
get a bit of money off.
The drive to Durban from Johannesburg is LONG. We set off at 8.30 and didn't arrive until 17.30 but although it felt long, we met some brilliant people who we spent a lot of our trip with, and some of the places we drove though, especially the Drakhansburg Mountains were stunning. If only I had had more time to stay there!
In Durban we chose to stay at Tekweni Backpackers which is
known for being the party place and my gosh was it! I have never known a place where so much tequila is drunk!
After lots of drinking games and learning how to light a
match with one hand (go check out my instagram to see, @erinkaywilliams), we
headed out to enjoy the Durban night life which is definitely worth trying! The
hostel was amazing, and they really do know how to make you feel welcome.
The next day we were meant to get onto the BazBus but as it
was 31 degrees we decided to have a change of plan and spend the day on the beach!
We convinced one of the
guys we met on the first day to drive with us to Chintsa, our next stop and so
after a day in the sunshine, we rented a car and made our way on the 700km trip
which took ALL day.
We stopped to see some beautiful places along the way including
lunch at Jaxx Restaurant in Port Shepstone, which has a brilliant view over the
ocean and is worth a visit if you are wanting a quick lunch stop.
If you're
wanting to do the drive though, be warned, START EARLY! We sadly didn't get
there before dark, which was a little unnerving.
The start of our trip was spent finding our feet and we soon
realised how actually having a few days of relaxing is not such a bad thing,
that being said, travelling the huge distances we did wasn't always that relaxing at all!
Have you ever been to South Africa? Where would you like to visit? Have you been any where I have?
Love
